Which DVDs have no sound ?
All DVDs, or just all or some movie or music video, etc., DVDs ?

The sound mixer for your sound adapter has many sound sources.
There may be a volume control for the sound source that is set too low by default.

See Response 6 in this

starting at

" Make sure you don't have volumes set too low or muted, for things you want to hear or use.... "

Note that the sound is Muted if the blue speaker icon has a red circle icon with a diagonal bar.

If that doesn't help

- you MAY need to install a sound codec or similar that is not built into Windows 7.
With the subject DVD you get no sound from in the DVD drive....
All Programs - Accessories - Windows Explorer.
Scroll down and open up Computer
Open up the contents of the (disk in the) DVD drive .
Some of the files are audio files.
If Windows doesn't "know" what program or audio codec opens the files, they will have a generic looking icon . When you double click on them, you will get a message that the file type is not recognized or similar.
RIGHT click on the file and choose Properties.
If the file extension is shown, the part of it after the dot, you need to search on the web for the codec or similar that opens that type of file, download it, and install it.
You MAY be able to get an optional codec for Windows Media Player that is suitable, or you may need to upgrade to a newer version of Windows Media Player that can play the file type or that has an optional codec available for the WMP version that will play the file type.

- is the external DVD drive directly connected to a USB port built into this netbook ?
If it's plugged into a port in a external hub that plugs into one port built into this netbook, it's a lot more likely you'll have problems.
The DVD drive connection requires that the USB port you plug it into is able to supply the full max 500ma USB 1.x / 2.0 spec, and it's well known that NOT all devices work correctly when plugged into a port in an external USB hub.

- have you re-installed the "drivers" for your sound adapter ? If so, it's COMMON for people to install those incorrectly, and for the software adapter / the software to NOT work correctly.
