no sound on gateway laptop

February 13, 2009 at 08:52:17
Specs: Windows XP
My gateway laptop computer abruptly stopped allowing any kind of sound. No music, no default Windows sound, nothing. I've tried attaching external speakers to no avail. Is this fixable?

Is there a speaker icon in the bottom right? If so right click and open the volume control and make sure volume is turned up and not muted.

If there is no Speaker Icon

Go to Control Panel > System > Click on the Hardware Tab > Click Device manager > Then locate the Sound, Video, and game controller. If there are any listings there please list them here. Also check to see if there are any icons that have a yellow ! or ?. If so please list.

These are listed under the Sound, Video, and Game Controllers:

Audio codecs
Legacy audio drivers
Legacy video capture devices
Media control devices
SigmaTel C-Major Audio
Video codecs

None have yellow alerts on them.

Have you tried going to the gateway website to download the Audio Drivers and reinstalling them? If not you may want to give that a shot.

Go to the manufacturers website and find the driver for the multimedia audio controller. You may need to uninstall all the audio devices and do a fresh install without allowing Windows to automatically find the drivers.
