No power/Broken mainboard?

Specs: Windows XP
Hi everyone,

I have a problem with an older computer.
The power Suply (the one with the fan in the back which distributes all the power to mainboard ,hdd and roms)was making a lot of noise and I happend to have another one laying around so I put it in .
I turned on the PC and it made a hell of a lot more noise , seemed the fans own wires were caught scratching the fan(have checked them seems to have no damage.)
While doing the check I placed the pc on its side to I can look at it better. I replaced the wires and tried to turn it on again.. all the fans spin for 1 a 2 seconds then the power goes off , and I smelled an electric smell .. did something died?
Iff turn on the pc now nothing happens mostly but when I pulled out the power suply cable for a bit and plug it back on , the fans spin all for a few seconds before it dies.I re-double checked iff all cables were good connected.. all were set in good . So my question is .. what did I broke?:D

Let me know any thought , I can get cheap replacements.

Sounds like your your Power Supply cables got into your CPU Fan damaging it. If you CPU fan does not spin-up to the proper speed the system will shut down to prevent you CPU from overheating and damaging its self.

Check to make sure the yellow wire on the CPU fan is not damaged because this is the wire used to detect the RPMs of the fan. If you stuck a fan in that does not have a RMP meter then it will not work because the mother board needs this to determine the speed of your fan.

"seconds then the power goes off , and I smelled an electric smell .. did something died?"

This is not a good sign. You may have hooked a wire upside down. The only wire I know of that is not keyed to prevent you from doing this is the Floppy Drive power. You may want to check there.

My guess is the 2nd PSU is worse than the 1st. Either fix the fan in the 1st one & put it back in the case, or buy a decent replacement.

Thanks for your replies .

I have checked the yellow wire , there is no damaging to be seen on it.
I also tried to disconnect my floppydrive and then I turned on the pc.. but it did not work.

PSU = Power Supply Unit? just guessing .

I have tried 3 intotal , they all worked , but they were just loud , that why I changed them
After I first did not get any power , i did swap back to the original one , but it did not work .

I really think something has died .. but what? ._.
