RAM doesn't usually "defect". What makes you think the 1GB stick was bad? And did you check the compatibility list before buying the replacement RAM?

my mother board is INTEL and the cpu is DUAL CORE. my previous RAM was 1 gb ddr2. few days ago, there was no display and beeping sounds were heard. one of my friend asked me to install a new RAm. so i thought of upgrading it and took a 2 gb ddr2 RAM. After locating the new ram in its slot, everything was fine for half an hour but suddenly the desktop shut down itself and later when i tried to Switch on, there was no display and no beeping sound of bios.

the beeping sound was a warning, do u remember how was the beeping sound?(#of beeps....)
these beeps are showing u a problem with a hardware it could be graphics card, ram anything depending on the beep. if u can tell us how the beep was then we could tell u what ur problem is. but now since u are not hearing any beeps it could be a motherboard failure as well, or a cmos battery failure.
u should not have listened to ur friend u should have asked for support directly as beeping sounds could be anything and messing around with the wrong part could cause more trouble
