New HP policy on downloads

Hp apparently has a new download policy. I keep getting a screen requiring me to provide email information before allowing me access to their downloads. What kind of BS is this. I was attempting to verify if Windows 7 drivers are available for a poster here.

No problem here. Just downloaded a driver from their site as a test and I had no screen like that.

The first link below is to the thread I was attempting to assist on.

The second link leads to the screen I am getting. I entered: HP Pavilion A6242N-B drivers in a Google search to get to that link. Try to go further with the second link to see what I mean.

Othehill, I just tried it and it gave me a pop-up screen asking if I wanted to participate in a survey.

It did ask for a name and email address but you can just choose "close" and the screen goes away and takes you to the download site.

Try going further and you will find you can't get past the OS selection screen without suppying email, etc.

Damn, After closing the survey screen I get a white box with Step one: Select your operating system. I select Windows 7 32 bit and click NEXT. I then get another box stating my input is valuable. If I try closing that box I get no further.

Going back to the same screen where the OS is selected there is a Step two. This shows a video and a software link for lightscribe updates.

No other drivers. I am guessing the issue here is that there are no Windows 7 32 bit drivers available on the HP site.

The OP in the first link was told to revert back to Vista. I just confirmed that by selecting Vista 32 bit and then proceeded to see a list of drivers. HP should simply state they are not supporting Windows 7 on that platform.

Hi Othehill, After I close the survey window, you get the Step 2 - Select an option message. Don't click on the Additional Software Driver Video Help. Instead, click on the second option which is Software - Mutimedia (1). Then click on Lightscribe System Software Update.

Scroll down and clcik on the sp26468.exe, and then it will download. It does support Windows 7, here is the list of OS's that file works on:

Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Business (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (32-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Starter, Microsoft Windows 7 (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Starter (32-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Basic (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Professional (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate (64-bit), Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Business (64-bit), Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate (64-bit), Microsoft Windows XP Professional, Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, Microsoft Windows XP Media Center, Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Microsoft Windows XP

I understand that update is available. What about all the other drivers normally available though. That was my point. The lightscribe update is the only Windows 7 update available.

I don't need any drivers for that rig myself. The computer came with Vista pre-installed. Either HP should provide Windows 7 drivers or if Windows 7 includes all necessary drivers you would think they would note that at the link.

Just aggravates me.

The reason I originally went to the HP site to start with was to verify the computer in question was Windows 7 compatible.

I did that because the OP in the other link stated that HP advised him to return to Vista. If the computer can run Vista it should run 7.

Tried that link (on an iPad). No pop-ups, and I was able to download the file. (Not much use on an iPad!)

Download which file? The lightscribe update? I didn't indicate i couldn't get that one. The issue is simply this. When selecting Windows 7 32 bit option I get no other drivers. Why in the H*ll do they have Windows 7 as an option. If the hardware is compatible and no other drivers are needed then HP should say that or provide links to the drivers.

In fairness, I did not watch the video so I can't say it was no help.

Win 7 and win xp should be removed in OS selection.

Sorry, I'm getting confused. I thought you were complaining about having to enter an email address before you could download any files. At least that's how I read your OP. My bad.

Initially that was my complaint. I realized by #8 that the issue was HP was looping me back to the survey. If I X out I would not see any files because there aren't any.

Performing the same operation while selecting Vista will take you to the next screen which is a list of available drivers. My bitch is they should notify you there are only limited downloads for Windows 7. One would expect that if the computer came with Vista that There should be some downloads for 7 besides an update for lightscribe. HP likes to post BIOS updates for thier products. Gets folks in trouble all the time.
