Specs: Windows
I have recently purchased a new HDD for my HP laptop. I have taken the old one out and put the new one in, the old HDD is unrecoverable. The new one is saying no bootable device selected. Just enquiring what do I need, new operating system, hp drivers?

Just unsure

You'll need to install an Operating System on the new hard drive. Do you have a valid OS install disk? If so, you would put the disk in the CD/DVD drive and boot to that disk. Then, install the OS, formatting and partitioning the drive as you wish. You'll also need to have a valid license key for that install.

You say the old HDD is unrecoverable. Is it toast completely or does it actually spin up at least?

If it will spin up you may be able clone the contents of the olde drive to the new. Most new drives arrive with a cut down clone utility for this purpose; or the associated website has it for download.

A new HDD will not have any recovery partition on it (obviously); whereas the old one may? And this is one reason to clone the olde HDD to the new...
