new hard drive partion

July 19, 2010 at 13:01:34
Specs: Windows XP sp3
This will be used on a win xp system and a windows 7 system.
I recently picked up a new hard drive 500gb Western Digital to use as storage connecting a "hard drive shell" by usb with the hard drive inserted into the shell.
After i format the hard drive do i have to partion the drive or would it be alright to just load up all my data onto it without a partition.
If i have to partition what would the best size of partitions to go with?
If i partition would "Partition Wizard" be a good program to try?

I really appreciate any feedback,
Thank you.

"After i format the hard drive do i have to partion the drive"

Partition 1st, then format. The entire 500GB (approx 465GB) is considered a single partition.

Thank you for your response.Much appreciated.
I will do just that.
Any guess on how long a format would take? Are we talking hours?
