Specs: Windows XP Pro
New I have installed a new Seagate 500GB hard drive in my Dell Dimension 9150 after a crash of my WD hard drive. Using the program disk supplied by Dell with the computer I get a message that "Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer." I had purchased two of the hard drives so I tried the second one with the same results. How can I get the computer to recognize the hard drive?

Verify the cable is connected properly at both ends. SATA cables can become disconnected easily if they do not have retainer clips on them.

If you changed data cable, make sure the cable is plugged into the SATA port that is on, or turn on the correct port in setup.

XP doesn't natively support SATA HDDs. You need to press F6 at the start of the installation, then install the SATA/RAID drivers from a floppy when prompted. If you don't have a floppy drive, you'll need to create a new XP installation disk with the SATA/RAID drivers slipstreamed into it.

The bios and diagnostics show the hard drive and the CD is the re-installation CD that came with the computer, but the Setup "did not find any hard disk drives..." This computer did not come with a floppy drive and according to Dell (three years ago) did not require one to Set up the new drive.

For everyone. I found this on http://news.softpedia.com/news/Inst... If you have a SATA option in your BIOS, you can avoid all of this work. I changed my BIOS setting from ACHI to SATA and now the XP CD recognizes the hard drive. It worked.
