You did not supply much details but you need to:
1- Initialize the hard drive
2- Partition the hard drive (even if it is only one large partition).
3- You need to Format the partition (s) before they can be used
4- You need to install the operating system onto the hard drive
4a- You need to clone your old hard drive onto the new one. IF you clone the hard drive you will later need to extend the existing partition to use the entire drive if possible (depending on the geometry of the original drive) or you will need to create and format a new partition with the remaining unallocated space.
If you plan to clone the old drive you will need the downloadable tools available from the hard drive manufacturer's website.
If you plan on installing clean on the new drive and later transferring the files over, you will need a windows install disk or recovery disk from the system manufacturer.
You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
