Specs: Linux i686),
eventually battery starts to charge and then unecessary. Dell tech said battery needs to be replaced but happens even when battery not in it. Should be able to run pc off adaptor alone. Yesterday operating system wouldn't start at all and beeped. fan bought for pc died as lap top gets very hot. Never hear a fan running since got it.Dell said needs RAM. Then started talking to me abut 2 kinds of memory. I said would free up some space like pix and since have. Battery 2 years old now. Only guarantee battery one year. Before Dell said nothing wrong with AC adapter so at a loss. Ofcourse anymore of their help or from my ISP requires money which don't have. Help welcomed. I do all things in my life as cheaply as possible as live on fixed income.

It does sound like the power cord or the jack in the laptop is the problem. If you know someone who also has a similar Dell then you may be able to borrow their cord to test this theory. You also may be able to go to a computer shop and see if they sell a suitable replacement power cord or auxiliary charger that is compatible and ask them if they will let you see if it makes your system work, and if it does then you would purchase it.
As far as your battery goes, check Dell's website to see if they had a battery recall on your system/battery model, if they did, then you should be able to get a new one for free (I know HP had a recall on some models), but they might not volunteer the information.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Dell has some of the worst tech's.

If Dell has tested the AC adapter then I assume there is an issue with the wall jack. Try another wall jack. Be very very careful. if there is some damage to the wall jack your life may be in danger from fire or electrocution. If another wall jack works properly, contact an electrician immediately to have the wall jack inspected. .
