Many software programs do have hardware locks to prevent the program from running on unauthorized equipment. These are usually called dongles. I am not sure if you actually need a dongle in order to run your equipment. If you do, try going to the link below and asking there.

I have a CAD program that requires a dongle to be installed in order for the program to work. This is a more elegant solution that allows the software to be installed on two or more computers while only allowing one instance at a time to run.

Yes software...but also was told when I bought it that there was an hardware key that went along with it.

Yes, you need software (a driver). Hardware is physical kit, like the plotter itself, and can't therefore be "copied".

It's pretty old. Drivers get a mention if you search Google but there's no certainty that the websites are safe so I prefer not to suggest a link.

Rather unlikely anyone on here would happen to have the software but no harm hanging on just in case.

Further to my #3 above:
Not so sure about a "hardware key". Most keys are a bunch of letters and/or figures you input to activate software. Ask the vendor to explain.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Apparently it's a 10 year old printer & may use a serial connection. If it does & your computer doesn't have a serial port, you will need to install a controller card. Maybe that's the hardware?

As for software/drivers, see the following & scroll down to "Update Your Drivers for SignPal Cutting Plotter":
