Specs: Windows 7 Home 64
In a rural area of MS and need a dial-up modem compatible with Win 7 Home. My 2 yr old USR modem does not work. Not much info out there for any that do work well. XP worked fine, but upgraded my PC and Win7 does not.

The first link below is for an internal modem that has answering machine capability in addition to the normal functions.

The second link is for a similar USB external modem.

I am familiar with the first vendor but not the second.

Both only state compatibility with Vista or older. They should also work OK with Windows 7 because the OSes are so similar.

Do you know if there is an internet provider available with a local number you can dial? Otherwise you may incur long distance charges.

Have you looked for a driver update for your existing device? May also be possible to run it in a WinXP compatibility mode.

"In a rural area.."

You may have the option where you are of getting a high speed connection via
- a satellite ISP - if you're already using satellite TV, some satellite TV providers can also provide internet service
- a shorter range satellite ISP, via a small satellite dish that points to a nearby town or city where the transmitter / receiver is.
- a cell phone service - if you're already using a cell phone, some cell phone service providers also have internet service available that connects to their own cell towers.

In all three cases, you may need to buy equipment initially, or in the first two cases you may be able to rent it for a monthly fee, but the monthly rate otherwise is often quite similar to what you would pay if you could get high speed cable or DSL or ADSL internet service where you are.

Might have to purchase a hardware modem. Not sure but I suspect that the USR is what is termed a winmodem. If it is not fully supported then you would either need to use a supported modem or a supported OS.
