Did you use new thermal compound when you replaced the fan? It sounds a lot like overheating. It's never a good idea to try to run without a properly installed processor fan. If you are lucky the processor will switch itself off; if you are unlucky it will fry.

Agreed, reinstall it properly (choose your CPU from the list):
Then monitor your temperatures with Speedfan or similar, if your temperature rises and then it gets noisy as it speeds up, you need to deal with the heat, but if it gets noisy without the temperature rising, then the fan's bearings are going and it needs to be replaced. If the temperature rises, it still could be the fan's bearings since it could be running slower than it should, but unless you are sure it is running slow, I would look for other causes like dust blocking the case vents, the exhaust fan not working, and other things first.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

How much does a new cpu fan cost, compared to a processor/motherboard/pc???

New thermal paste is a must when replacing cpu fan.

Good Luck - Keep us posted
