My PC freezes often

Intel Core 2 duo e7500 dual core process...

Specs: Windows XP
My WinXP SP3 Intel Core 2 Duo PC has an
ASUS motherboard and is fairly new. Very
recently it started freezing randomly and would
then work fine for days together before starting
all over again.
I eliminated all issues one by one till I finally
got to the root of the problem by replacing the
data cable connecting my IDE HDD and DVD
drive to the motherboard with a new one. This
too worked for a week without issues but now
it suddenly started again.
I have removed the cable connection to the
motherboard and left the PC on for 2 days and
nights without problems.
However, I cannot use my HDD or DVD drive. I
have a primary SATA HDD though.
What could be the problem here and is there a
solution? Thanks for your time.

Sounds like you Drive Controller is going out. Being that it is on the mother board you will probably need to get an a PCI SATA controller card for your computer.

Just what I was fearing. Your answer has only confirmed my
doubts. At least I don't have to change the motherboard...

Thanks a million pal.
