My mouse locks up about 8 times every day.

Specs: Windows XP
This has been a problem for over 6 months. I'm tired of the multiple re-boot days. I loaded FF as I thought it was an IE / www problem, but I realize now that that was the wrong tree. Don't know what other things to say...I'll be on line, or even off, and the mouse will vanish or just stop. and the puter will be 'no one home' for like 4 minutes. I can re-boot in 3 minutes, but some times I have to double down on the re-boot to get back to business as usual. Any ideas out there?

Mouse vanishes? How?

Type of mouse, USB, PS/2, wireless?
Make of PC?
Model of PC?
Age of PC?
Is antivirus installed, running & up to date?

I think you have bigger issues than just the mouse.

Just another stupid saying...

I had a similar problem. The cursor would occasionally become invisible. I could move the mouse around and if it happened to land on an icon I could click it normally but I just couldn't see it.

I never figured out why it did that but the fix was to change the mouse pointer from the standard white to 'windows black (large)' in mouse properties. The black pointer never disappeared.

tried 5 times to change mouse pointer and other params inside of control panel. 5 times as i hit OK or APPLY i get the hourglass cursor (movable but not clickable) for 5 minutes until I re-boot. I think we are getting closer to the software problem. Thanks so much for the 'black cursor' lead.

@ Caps lock Dave, Great little post there. Will be off to check the IRQ situation next. But will make detailed notes before changing anything, but you adequately scared me into not changing anything on that IRQ page.

I've got like 8 or 10 in the tray at start up, firewall, AntiV, skype, I really need all but two or maybe three of em. Don't think resources are the problem, but IRQ conflicts may be my deal

Device manager show green for the mouse (it's IRQ 12)

DM reports 3 errors for MulitMedia Controler. I think that is my soundblaster's mic input jack. That sucker is even older, and hasn't worked (mic input) in years. I'm using Aux jack for skype and that is another pain I have.

When I try to change any mouse params in control panel. I get a lock up. any other way into that page. Safe Mode??? I really hope there are a few of you still on this. Thanks RVB

If you're getting the non-stop hourglass it's probably not an invisibility issue.

Even if you need most of the task bar items you can temporarily disable them and see if that has any affect. If so, maybe it's just a configuration that can be changed.
