Where did you get the registry tool from?
There was no back up provision in the tool? Try a system restore, if that does not work insert the XP CD and do a repair.

98 and ME had that wonderful SCANREG/RESTORE command from which you could restore any of 5 previous registries. Of course XP doesn't have that. The closest you can get is 'last known good configuration' from the F8 boot menu. You've probably already overwritten the old regiistry that you'd need. But you can give it a try.

Your other two options are system restore, as already mentioned, or get your friend to write a .reg file that will remove what his previous invention messed up.

Delete the mouse in device manager and reboot. See if it gets setup right.
