My gateway laptop is stuck on update screen...

Gateway laptop NOTEBOOK

Specs: Windows 8
My gateway laptop with Windows 8 was installing automatic updates (not sure what they were) when a friend held the power button in and turned it off. When turned back on it starts the update but never goes past 70% then restarts and says failure to configure windows updates.... then restarts and goes back to installing updates but never finishes it keeps going back and forth. My keyboard doesn't work right. There are a few letters that don't work as well as a few other buttons that I'm not exactly sure which ones they are. I have tried f8 but that must be a key that doesn't work. Is there any other way to get past the update process? The gateway logo comes up then goes to a blue screen to update and will not go any further. Is there anything else I can do??

I think you'll need to reinstall Windows (Factory Recovery) to fix that.

Can you get into safe-mode (press, and possibly hold) F8 after the initial (Gateway?) splash screen, which appears as the laptop boots up.

Whilst you "may" end up doing a factory restore/reset routine - if all else fails - avoid it for now. A factory restore/reset will erase all your personal files in the process. So it's rather important to secure and safe guard those first. If the system will at least boot into sAfe-mode you can copy files to external storage from there. Typically to dvd at least; but to another external hard drive too is nice(r). Check/verify copies are accessible on another computer if possible.

If the system won't boot into safe-mode, there are other ways to copy those files.

I'm thinking that f8 is one of the keys that don't work on the keyboard because i have tried it and nothing happens. i'm not sure what happened to my keyboard that several of the keys do not work. its a, n, q, some numbers the shift and F8 i'm guessing. Nothing was spilled on it so i'm not sure what happened but that is a whole other problem. right now my main concern is getting past the endless update cycle. i did just restore it to factory settings the day before the update problem. would that affect the updates in any way possibly a file or something missing

Far too hopeful but before you fire the big guns discharge the motherboard components. At odd times it unsticks things:

Turn off computer, remove power cord and main battery. Before re-assembling hold EDIT: Power Off/On button in for at least 20 seconds

Yeah, and cross fingers and toes too.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

discharge the motherboard components? i have already turned it off and removed the battery but same thing happens....gateway logo comes up the goes to the updating that never finishes. if i take a keyboard that plugs in to the usb on my laptop so i am able to try the F8 option, would it work possibly?

remove battery and power adapter then press and hold on button for 30 seconds then put battery back power back and restart sometimes this unsticks things as it discharges the motherboard sometimes you ave to do it more than once to get it done but its worth a try once unstuck then you can use a external keyboard

Oops, the crucial "hold Power button" went missing in my post (no idea why) - have now added it to #4.

It probably won't help but pity the most important part of the procedure was lost.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks
