My External Hard Drive Says Access Denied

Specs: Windows 7
Hello - I really hope someone can help me.

I had a Toshiba laptop running windows XP - i dropped it and cracked the screen in 2009. I have the hard drive from this laptop.

I know have a HP laptop running windows 7. I have bought a devise which plugs into the external hard drive from my old laptop and connects to the new one via usb. The new laptop recognised it but when i try to import my pictures it says access denided.
I have been looking on various forums all morning and have taken ownership of the external files following the instructions - but it still says access denied.
On my computer I can view the external hard drive it says F:/Vista and I can access the files inside but none of them are my photos!
I've tried again to plug in and click 'import' after i'd taken ownership but still says access denined.

Any help / comments would be great - i am very un-techincal so please phrase simply!

Thanks, Charlotte

Did you keep the photos in an encrypted file by any chance?
If so then they are lost since the encryption was a function of the XP operating system and the user account that created them.
