my E drive (optical drive)

December 28, 2010 at 21:19:20
Specs: Windows XP
I use windows media player (and it has been updated). I have lots of music discs.....out of
all my discs my E drive will only play ONE of them! It is a CD-RW music disc that I recorded
5 years ago! If I put a brand new disc in the drive for burning........windows media player keeps
telling me to insert a blank disc! If I put any pre-recorded CD-R disc in the drive......it doesn't
do anything! If I put my EAGLES greatest hits disc in the drive........the drive doesn't do
anything! If I put a CD cleaning disc in the drive.......the drive doesn't do anything! What is
wrong with this E drive? It will play a CD-RW disc.....that I recorded in Sept. of 2005......but
that's it! Anybody got any ideas?

Do the disks work in other optical drives?

Do you have a bootable cd? Boot up with it just to see if the drive is good. If it boots OK the problem is probably software-related.

If it doesn't boot then the drive is likely dying even though it accepts one of the cd's.

Your floppy drive isn't an optical drive so we don't care about that.

So your D: drive is also an optical drive and the cd's work in that one? If so, perhaps there's a WMP setting that has it only looking for media disks in D:

You may want to open the case and make sure the data cable going to E: is tightly connected and in good condition.

If that's not it try disconnecting D: so that E: is the only optical dirve and see if that helps.
