My Dell Desk Top Computer Crashed?

June 5, 2012 at 13:03:02
Specs: Windows 7, Pentium 4
I tried to start my Dell Desk Top and it did not turn on. I heard a fan with a noise that kept getting louder and louder and that was it. Has my computer crashed? Is there any solution? Couldn't turn it off so I unplugged it, plugged it back in and had the same thing - just noise like a jet taking off.

I guess posting the model number & specs is too much to ask. But it sounds like your CPU (P4) is overheating & preventing the system from booting. When is the last time you opened the case & blew the dust out of it?

Sorry, I am at work and don't have the specs with me. I did however open it up to blow the dust out with the aerosol can of air. Did not help.

I had a machine that did that once. It was a failed hard drive.

"noise like a jet taking off" is an indication that the CPU is overheating.

Check that your CPU heat sink is properly locked down. Do not release it, but if it is not locked down solid, you will need to remove it, clean off all of the old thermal compound, and reapply it correctly.

If not loose, try unplugging the hard drive and any accessories and see if you can boot to the BIOS set up screen. If you can, then check your temperatures there. While you are at it, check your Voltages as they are listed there, they need to be within 5% of their nominal voltages.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
