My CPU fan speed is variable?

January 1, 2011 at 20:06:41
Specs: Windows XP, Pentium 4 3GHz
I have this scenario right from the purchase of my computer, the CPU FAN speeds up when the processor utilization goes above 50% ie, while i am playing a game or some huge task. And it gradually slows down to low speed/noise while the CPU usage is lower than 10%. I have an assembled PC with Intel 915GAV motherboard and P4 3GHz processor, SATA Hard disk. Always had this question on my mind. Any one know the reason behind this case?

Is this a trick question or are you really unable to figure out that as your CPU works harder it generates more heat, triggering the fan to run faster in an effort to cool it down? The P4 3ghz prescot core processor you have ( I have 4 systems with them) is a notoriously hot running CPU. If you are interested to monitor your temperatures during operation then download and install Speedfan. http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php

Help you what? There is nothing wrong. Your fan is supposed to go faster when the CPU gets hot. If the fan is too noisy for you you can always investigate replacing your heatsink & fan for an after-market model with lower noise level .

There may be some adjustment you can make in BIOS to moderate the fan speed.
Did you look at the link I provided for Speedfan? It explains what the program can do for you.

dude richard is right everything in ur computer video card HDD cpu psu fans, speed up when ur gaming or when they are under load since they are generating heat.
speedfan monitors ur computer temps and fan speeds.
im sure richard gave u the link to speedfan for u to test with it and see when ur computer is under load how the temps go up and the fans go up
