My computer is extremely slow now.

Specs: Vista Basic, Athlon XP 3200, I think and 2gb of DDR ram
Within the last two months, my computer started working at 1/8th its normal speed. I can barely type my resume, much less play the games that were simple to run a week before.

I sorta know my way around a computer so I have already checked for spyware, viruses and so on. Hell, I have even done a fresh Vista install after giving up there. Still, same problem.

My main problem that I am thinking on is how the hard drive light is always on and it feels like it is doing major calculations, even if the system is sitting idle and not doing anything that I asked it to. Please help, I am out of ideas and I am quite annoyed that I can't even do the basic things now on it.

The hard drive light is either always on or will blink periodically.

Boot to safe mode and use disk clean up.

Other ideas.

Above is lack of disk space,

Faulty or too little ram,

Malware, spyware, virus,

Faulty drivers or hardware,

Bios settings wrong,

Temp too high causing cpu throttling?

Many 10 more things.

A tool in xp called performance monitor can help but it is a bit technical.

Thats fine, I will try performance monitor. I could understand CPU throttling but I do not know how to check it, however the other things are out as I was using a clean disk to install with and as much as a resource hog Vista is, I doubt it needs a 100gb hard drive.

You might also want to download and run the manufacturer's diagnostics for your hard drive.
