State the model of your laptop.
The specific brand name system model is usually on a label on the outside of the case somewhere, or it can be determined by going to the brand name's web site.
If the laptop is doing nothing at all - no leds light up - the hard drive doesn't start spinning - you probably have a main battery problem, or the main battery isn't being charged properly for some reason.

Correction for that:
The jack in the laptop should move when you wiggle the plug in the jack.
should have been
The jack in the laptop should NOT move when you wiggle the plug in the jack
If the latop does seems to be working normally other than you're getting no video....
Connect a monitor to the VGA port when the laptop is not running, then boot the laptop - in most cases the video on the external monitor will automatically work.
If the display on the external monitor is fine, there's nothing wrong with the display (video) adapter on the laptop.
