Junie, try googling how to clean a cd/dvd player. Sometimes the lens gets dirty. If cleaning doesn't help, you'll need a replacement.

Thanks so much for your reply Grasshopper... I did spray 'air' from a can into cd/dvd but still doesn't play unfortunately it looks like I'll need a new cd/dvd - one further thought though, in properties 'general' there is a 'window' with flashing curser which seems to expect me to 'write' something in the window and another curious thing is that it states 'used space: 0 bytes & free space: 0 bytes, capacity: 0 bytes' and a blue disc with 'Drive D' written underneath, which seems rather wrong to this computer illiterate being....
Thanks again for your help... I suspect I will be asking how to remove the inoperable cd/dvd & replace it with a new one :0)
All the Best - Junie
