My cd-rom drawer opens buring boot up.

January 19, 2011 at 13:16:10
Specs: Windows 7, 4 gig ram
I have tried disabling the device drivers, but it still happens. I have to force the drawer to stay closed with my finger. After two tries, it stops trying to open. I ran the safe mode and got the boot log printout of loading drivers, but I have no clue as to which one is causing the problem.

Might be the cdrom. Does this happen before or after the OS starts to load?

Dave,
Thanks for your reply. It happens a few seconds after starting the computer, about the time the firefly logo begins to form on the screen (Win 7). It usually does it twice if I hold the tray in with my finger. It keeps going on and on if I don't hold it in. It could be the cd-rom, it is about 4 years old, but not used very much. I guess my next step will be to crack open the case and poke around. Maybe a loose connection.

If the cdrom works OK otherwise then I doubt it a loose connection.

You might try hitting the pause/break key after you start it up but before the OS starts to load. Then see if the cdrom still does it. If so it must be the cdrom. Even if it doesn't do it then it might still be a cdrom thing. If you can swap it with another that would let you know for sure.

Dave,
Yeah, the drawer opens actually earlier than I said, before the "Windows Is Starting" graphic displays, way before windows starts to load. I'll have to try another drive, I'm afraid. At least they are not too pricey.
