First thing to do is to determine if the problem is with WinXP or the drive. If you have a bootable CD, try booting directly to it. If the drive can read a disk at that time then the problem is with WinXP. Is the drive named correctly in My Computer? Does the drive light go on and the disk spin?

Post back after testing

The button on the front of the drive should work in any case when the computer is running.
When you press it , it should eject the tray, when you press it again (on a desktop drive) it should retract the tray, the led on it should come on at least briefly, and if there is a disk on the tray, it should spin at least briefly (you should hear it spin).

If it doesn't spin the disk, or if it doesn't spin it at least at the original 1X audio CD speed, Windows and the mboard's bios can't detect the disk.

The drive must be able to read the type of disk you insert in it .
CD-rom only drives, or CD-RW only drives, cannot read DVDs.
If there's nothing wrong with the drive, when you insert a disk, the led on the front of it will go on and off for a while then stay off when you insert a DVD in a CD-rom only drive, or a CD-RW only drive.

My Computer shows hard disk drive ACER (C:) & ACER DATA (D:)
removable DVD-RAM DRIVE (E:) & 31/2" Floppy (A:).

I could play a music CD but only if I double-clicked on D: as above, otherwise nothing. Although the drive worked the status light never came on. The second disc tray will not even open!
Also, using Roxio, I ran a back-up of only changed & new data. DVD+RW was in tray, job ran but drive neither lit up nor copied anything ( I couldn't hear disc spinning. Copy of report below which reads as if all ok. (problem with Macromedia flash).
Have bootable file on original Roxio back-up from July - didn't run it though. Don't know anything about 'Win' files
Don't know if this info helps or not. mom11

The 'led' does not come on or flash. I could play a music cd only if I clicked ACER DATA (D:) under My Computer. Using Roxio I ran a back-up for changed/new data. Inserted a DVD+RW, job ran & ended fine but I couldn't hear 'spinning' sound from drive.
The 2nd tray will not even open!!

So if you press the button on the face of the CD/DVD drive, the tray will not open and the light will not go on?

If the disk for the Roxio backup still in the drive?

What drive are you talking about here? "The second disc tray will not even open!" Are you talking about the 3 1/2" floppy drive?

The status light on your CD/DVD drive normally doesn't stay on continuously when reading or writing a disk. It should periodically flash. If you are able to play a music CD then the drive must be a least partially working (the CD part). The fact it doesn't auto play is just a setting in Windows. Is that why you say it doesn't work?

Cpu has 2 dvd/cd slots & a 3 1/2 " floppy. The top cd/dvd tray will open & play music cd if D: drive is clilcked under my computer. The led for this tray neither goes on nor flashes.
The 2nd cd/dvd tray will not open at all & led does not go on or flash. I don't use the floppy drive.
I removed the Roxio disk once backup fully complete - as stated before I don't think backup files were stored to disk.
I don't know anything about WinXp - what it does or how it works. Plus I don't like 'fiddling' with programs etc. as I'm not that knowledgable in this area.
Does this help?

If the tray will not open then either the power has been disconnected, or that drive is defective.

If BOTH of these drives are IDE type and are connected to the SAME cable the defective drive can affect the other drive. You need to open the case and disconnect both the power and data connectors from the inoperable drive.

You don't really need to remove the drive at this time. You don't really need two optical drives so you can just ignore it. Post back what you find. How old are those drives?

"The 2nd cd/dvd tray will not open at all & led does not go on or flash. "

There is a small rubber drive belt, that is used for the mechanism that ejects and retracts the tray, that can stretch or break when a desktop optical drive is old, resulting in the drive's tray won't eject or retract, but the led should come on when you press the button on the front of the drive in any case - all that requires is that the power connector is connected to the drive and the computer is running.
Is there a power connector connected to it ?

Thanks muchly for your help but I'm going to have to get someone to take a look at CPU & drives. Your suggestion is beyond my 'scope' but will show our chat to whomever has a look.

Again, my thanks

Sorry but you've 'lost me' LOL ! My limited knowledge is with the ' outside' of the hardware not the 'inside'. I'm going to find someone who does know 'the guts' of a computer!

Thanks for your help. I will pass your suggestions on.

Thanks for the thanks.

The term CPU is frequently mis-used.
It is NOT your computer case and all the components inside of it !

What is CPU ?
