My Big foot killed my external HDD

Dell Inspiron 1545

Specs: Windows XP, Pentium Dual core 3 GB
I was about to take my external somewhere to get someone's info off there drive so it could be transferred to a new computer. My big foot caught one of the cables and knocked it off the counter it broke the USB connector on the little circuit. I thought to myself maybe that is the only damage. So I take the case apart and get the drive out. Drive seems OK I connect it to my computer and boot the computer. BIOS see's the drive drive management see's the drive but looks unformatted. I take a look on a bootable partition CD it's not formatted. I ran diagnostic test on the drive and it passed. I had about 250 GB of very important info on the drive. I went and purchased a program that cost $85.00 total to recover the data. It did not find the 250 GB of data I had. Is there anything I can do? Is my data gone? I guess and I tried the program called recuva and it found about the same thing as the other program.

Boot to a live linux cd and see if you can mount the drive. It may be possible to use teskdisk or photorec to get data off.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?

The drive is already mounted. All it did was delete the partition. Also the WD Virtual drive that WD puts on there for the software is gone. I have taken the drive out of the case and put it in my desktop ran a diagnostics on it and it passed. I think the drive is OK and I am lucky. Is it possible to still use that Linux CD and recover my data? The $85.00 program did not work so is there a chance with linux? A friend of mine told me to use linux also and it should recover the data. I guess I lost that $85.00. I could try and get a refund from that company I guess I am not sure.
