Specs: Windows Vista
when playing downloaded games it skips and paues erratically. I would guess that the noise is from the fan but what is causing the games to sputter and pause?

I know it's not easy to explain noises but could you try please?
If it's a clicking sound it could be the HD about to fail. Compare it to some of these:

If it's a fan sticking it could cause overheating.

Either could cause games to be erratic.

-Get compressed air can and use it on vents.
-If the fan continue to make noise replace it.
-Never use a laptop on soft material, it should be placed on hard flat surface.

U can use this tool to monitor temperature.

If you want a free tool for temperature monitoring try Speedfan. Been using it for years.

Derek, the sound is like whirring sound, at times it is louder than others. I purchased a new ultrabook but would like to have the old laptop for game playing only so I hope is it not on it's leg. I really appreciate everyone's response and will check out some of the recommendations and if all else fails I'll have an expert check it out. Thanks again.

To sort this you have to determine exactly where the sound is coming from. It might sound odd but often a stick of wood against the suspected items (other end in ear) can help find the culprit.

"Whirring" sounds more like fan needs lubrication. On PC's it was possible to add a single drop of sewing machine oil to the bearing by removing the center sticker. Might be more fiddling with a laptop.

Your game problems might be something completely different.
