mouse/keyboard no longer works. any ideas why

Specs: Windows Vista, Gateway
I have Windows Vista, and all of a sudden my mouse and keyboard no longer work. When I unplug or restart the CPU, the lights on the keyboard flash on and then the keyboard becomes unresponsive. The laser light on the mouse stays on, but the cursor on the screen will not move. Help please!

Make sure USB isn't locked in the BIOS. Have you tried additional ports?

Hmm if its happening prior to the OS even loading then its bad real bad. Your computer should be able to read anything in the USB ports (Mouse and keyboard wise). Kinda crummy solution but does your computer have PS2 ports, those funny round typically green and purple ports?

Yes, both ports. Would a hard drive wipe or factory reset be an option?
