Motherboard resets, pc hangs

Specs: Windows 7, 2.4/4gig
Hey guys i have a problem with my pc. So first off when i disconnect the power cord from the supply and reconnect it. At bootup my mobo goes to default settings. When i get to windows i need to reajust date and time. At times my pc hangs and i am forced to hard reboot, after my system will start acting weird and usually it will hang again. When i then disconnect the power cord and reboot so that my mobo will resest to default again my system runs fine. It's the weirdest thing, i have tried replacing the battery on the mobo but the problem still there. I dont know what to do to fix this problem or where the problem lies. Any suggestions?

Possible the issue is NOT the CMOS battery but that is the most likely cause.

Are you saving the settings when exiting the BIOS?

Did this start all of a sudden or what?

When removing the old battery it is possible to bend the contacts. Also installing the battery upside down will not work either.

Did you mess around with the clear CMOS jumper?

I did not mess with anything on the motherboard and the battery is fitted correctly. I got this pc from a family member. I forgot to mention that from time to time again when unplugging the power cord it also can give a h/w monitor error on boot. This same error my family member also had. The voltages will then be incorrectly in my bios. But when i press F1 and continue the pc boots just fine and everything still works like it should. Running a program on my pc to check the voltages gives me the right numbers so it is weird. When i just reboot the error keeps occurring. I usually then unplug the power cord again, the mobo resets to default setting because of this and the error is gone. But offcourse the clock and date has to be corrected in windows.

i know you said its connected right if it is the round coin type battery generally + is on top facing you .i have had trouble before where i bent the top clip to far and it didn't make good connection but always make sure you save settings when you reset clock and date

Yeah it just about has to be the cmos battery. As long as it's plugged in, the power supply provides a small charge to the motherboard keeping the cmos charged. When you unplug the cord only the battery is keeping it charged.

Besides checking the clip you may need to pull the motherboard and check the battery holder solder joints.

It's either something like that or a failure in the cmos circuitry.

do you guys think the problem could be with the power supply? I am a noob when it comes to hardware but there are things that make me think the power supply is at faulth. Like just now i boot the pc and i get multiple errors. No keyboard found, h/w monitor error, and defaults loaded. I shut it down and push the cable harder into the power supply and wiggle it a bit. I boot again and no more errors only the cmos defaults loaded error where i just press F1 to continue booting.

I suggest you install HWMonitor and run it in real time. Check the voltages on the 3.3v, 5v & 12v rails. They should all be within +-5% of the stated voltage.

Also check the temperatures. Good method to determine when you need to blow out the case with canned or compressed air.

I recommend that you do NOT tamper with the power cable when starting the computer. If the cable is truly loose then you need to either replace it or tighten up the contacts on the PSU. I have never seen that issue to be a problem.

What type of keyboard are you using? Wireless, USB, PS/2?

Get HWMonitor at the link below. HWMonitor will also show you the voltage for the CMOS battery. the default voltage is 3.3v.

You may need to perform a system scan for missing or corrupt files. See the second link for help with that.

Your voltages and temperatures look OK. I doubt there is anything wrong with the power supply.

Did you run a scan from the second link?

You might want to check for bad capacitors on your motherboard. Look at the link below to see what to look for. Bulging or leaking means bad.

The contacts for the CMOS battery can get bent when removing the old battery. Should be tight.

What happens if you get running, shut down and restart right away?

Don't mess with the power cord.

I just did that system check from your second link and all is fine, doesnt give me any errors. When my system runs and i reboot it still runs fine. When my pc hangs its usually after it's been on for a while. Sometimes when my pc sits idle for a while it goes to sleep mode like it should but then i cant seem to wake it up again and am forced to hard reset again. I have also had times when the pc would just boot up out of itself after chosing to shut it off and no i did not click restart windows.

Anyways thanks for trying to help me so far guys i appreciate it.

Go to the power options in Control panel and tick my custom plan. Then use the change settings option. Set your desired times there and then click on "change the advanced settings".

Under sleep, you can set a time to sleep but set hibernate to never.
USB settings to disabled
PCI express OFF

Look in Device Manager to see if any hardware has yellow or red punctuation next to it. That would mean it is not working correctly if at all.

Also try reseating ALL cards, cables and RAM. Snap each RAM module in and out 4 or 5 times to burnish the contacts. This is done with the computer unplugged from the AC.

hey guys so i checked out my mobo, unplugged rams and reset them i also adjusted the contacts on the battery slightly. So result, when i unplug power my settings are saved now. So that was a part of the problem that is solved. But my pc still gets these freezes now and then. They start out slowly like when i am in a game the game starts lagging and the sound and music starts becomming slow like its in slow motion. Then it freezes on me for about 15 sec and after that all is good again. This keeps happening more and more frequent untill it freezes again and i have to hard reset. Any ideas?

Sounds like overheating of the CPU or GPU. Run HWMonitor when gaming to see what is happening. Hard drives can also overheat if you have bad case design or too small a case.
