monitor wont display anything

Specs: Windows XP Pro, pentium 3, 512 mb (256 x 2)
i was playing an online game when suddenly the computer shut completely down. i thought it was an overheat because the usb ports and heatsink were hpt sp theirfore cleared any dust in heatsink and fan. it did not work. plugged up a power supply with more than double its wattage, still didnt work. unseated cards and put in different video card. same thing, monitor still in standby mode. monitor is assumed to be working. tried integrated video. no prevail. plz help!

Do you hear any beep at start up? Sounds like the motherboard or possibly the processor.

About the only thing I can suggest you try would be to clear the CMOS while the computer is unplugged. There is a jumper on the board for that purpose. If you can't locate it then remove the coin shaped CMOS battery for a minute or so and then replace.

If the system giving you the problem is the optiplex listed in your heading then I would suggest you don't waste any money trying to get it going. Since you say the USB ports were hot to touch I would suspect an electrical short in the motherboard.
That may have taken out the CPU, ram and even damaged the drives. What USB device was operating at the time of failure? It may have drawn too much current for the port to handle.

Salvage the drives and ditch the rest.
