monitor / video card problem?

Dell Inspiron 9300 notebook

Specs: Windows XP, 2Gb
I was just using my laptop to view a website and the entire LCD screen went blank.
On restarting, there were a load of commas all across the bottup screen. SUbsequent screens show regula rpatterns of orange aquares and or flickering blue squares.
I cannot get to the XP login prompt to do anything else so I started it up in safe mode and could login and see the desktop but the screen still has blue squares across it but in the background (ie XP OS screen is overlayed successfully).
Any ideas on what this could be?

I have done 2 system restore to earlier points with no change.
I think the only options are a boot virus or more likely because of the safe mode operation that it is a video card or driver problem?

Edit: I just uninstalled the driver and started up in safe mode and the main display worked but still had those blue squares across the screen.
On trying to reinstall the dell nvidia driver, I got an error about the display imgmirror not working and to restart, still no luck after that.

Is that dirt I see all over the screen? That's disgusting! If that's any indication of how well you take care of your laptop, my guess is the laptop's cooling vents are so clogged with dust that the graphics chip overheated & is failing. At this point, it may be too late to save it.

Nah it's a tiny bit of dust that showed up in the picture sue to the sunlight. I actually clean the screen every week.
Now, do you have any technical solutions? :)
The fan has been coming on a lot in recent months but it's not overheating, well within temp ranges.
