Monitor turns off computer stays on

April 18, 2009 at 20:58:47
Specs: Windows XP
I am having an issue with my computer. It boots up normally but then shortly afterwards the monitor flashes and cuts off as if it is hibernating. I have changed the monitor and it continues to do the same thing. It is clearly not an monitor issue but a cpu issue. Could it be the video card? Or is it time for a new computer? Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Go to Control panel/Power Options and see if you have the monitor set to go into standby after a specified period of time.

Thanks for your response, but no that is not the issue. I neglected to mention that I have already checked that and I have have it set to never shut down or hibernate.

Ok, now that the simplest thing to chack is not the problem-what video card are you using, and have you checked any temperatures ?

One other simple thing to check: Do you have another monitor you could try to se if it does the same thing ? If not, make sure the cable is secure and the connections are tight.
