monitor screen is black

Specs: Windows xp, 2.0/ 2 gigs of ramof ram
I don't have access to the laptop and my friend is computer illiterate so I will tell you what I have tried so far and what the problem is. The laptop was turned on and the screen is black even at bootup. I wanted to suggest that she try hooking it up to an external monitor and press the button on the laptop that transfers the image to an external monitor. She has no cable and no monitor to try this. I know she has XP and the laptop is older(how old I don't know). I thought that maybe she hit the button that transfers the screen to a monitor by accident so I told her to press it to get the screen to work, and to also try pressing the fn(function button) before pressing the button that transfers the images to an external monitor. That did not work. Before telling her to take it to a technician does anyone have any idea. Asking her to open it, and/or replace any wires is not an option. Even if the wires were bad, and found she would only make it worse.

You should determine the exact component that is causing the issue of a black screen.

For this, restart the computer first in Safe Mode.

Before troubleshooting, first take a backup of all the system files.

Then determine which component is causing the problem.

Find the extent of the damage caused by this problem.

Then measures should be adopted to solve the issue.

If the issue cannot be solved by you alone, then HP customer care should be contacted.

The screen is black from the moment it turns on so there is to way to for her to see how to put it into safe mode, which is why I am thinking it is a physicial(hardware) issue instead of a software issue.
