You didn't list your system specs, so I'm going to assume you have onboard video. With a fresh install of Windows, you need to install the chipset drivers for your motherboard. Look on the cd for that listing. Post back with the make and model # of the computer.

That still doesn't help. Dell makes a lot of computers. Since you have a Dell, go to the Dell website and enter your service tag # which can be found on a label on the computer. You will be directed to a web page containing your model. Download and then install the drivers for your video device. You will then be able to choose more resolutions. 256 megs of ram won't cut it with Vista. You should upgrade the ram to at least 1 gig or more.

Before I even clicked on your post, I knew exactly what the problem was - you formatted & reinstalled Windows, but didn't install the drivers. We can't help unless you list the specs. If you have a Dell, list the exact model & model number (example, Dimension 8200). Or if you know the make/model of the graphics card, post that instead. Most likely, you're missing a whole bunch of drivers - motherboard chipset, video, audio, network, etc. XP may have loaded generic drivers, but they're only as current as the XP disc. In other words, the drivers are 10 yrs old. Also, 256MB isn't enough RAM to run XP decently & it's definitely not enough for Vista or Win 7.

Yes as Grasshopper is saying....you have a fresh install of XP, yet posted in Vista? If this originally had Vista on it and you are using that driver disk....they are likely Vista drivers only. So try looking up your model(dell support, driver & downloads...model etc) under the xp operating; you get the choice (usually a drop down menu to choose the operating system). If your model was made only for vista and window 7 and does not provide xp drivers this can be icky. If the drivers are there, it is a matter of downloading any missing drivers after the XP install. Your are probably to be found under video adapter and chipsets as Grasshopper says. Check the device manager (right click My Computer and select Poperties, Hadware then device manager, this should show you any missing drivers, and those need installation. Goodluck, let us know if this is a Vista back to XP conversion??
