Message that external drive needs reformatting

May 5, 2013 at 08:45:37
Specs: Windows 7
I inserted a USB/Flash drive that I used less than an hour previously with no problems and a message popped up that it needed to be reformatted before I could use it and if I reformat it I will lose all the data on it. Is there a way to retrieve the data?

Unfortunately that can happen with flash drives - they are not seen as a secure medium.

You could try Recuva on it:

Also try it on another computer - sometimes they can suddenly get fussy. If this works you can save it onto the HD then format the flash drive and put them back again.

Always pop back and let us know the outcome - thanks

Improper removal of a USB drive can cause that to happen. You should always use the "safely remove icon by the clock".

Go to Windows Disk Management and view the drive there. If the drive shows RAW as the format type then try using Easeus Partition Recovery to repair the damaged partition.

Get Easeus Partition Repair at the link below.
