Single core cpu's aren't good when it comes to do mult-task. I have similar system(p4 3.0ghz, 1gb ram) and i can listen music(foobar) while doing photoshop(cs). Use task-manager or process explorer to identify the process that eat more cpu. Are u using firefox or ie or chrome? Yes upgrading is a good idea.

I'd normally recommend the X58/Core i7 950 with an overclocked GTX 460 graphics card, but because Intel's Sandy Bridge and AMD's Bulldozer processors are right around the corner, WAIT a few months. I know, using that P4 must be painful, but you can do it. :)

The Sandy Bridge i7s will be much faster than the current Nehalem chips, and the Bulldozers should bulldoze the Phenom II X6.
