Gateway says RAM expandable to 2gb. Intel says 4gb. the computer comes with 2x512 modules. tell me if i'm wrong: i could add 2x1gb modules to total 3gb. Right? gateway site=http://support.gateway.com/s/PC/R/5293/5293sp3.shtml)

I would tend to believe gateway. OEMs like gateway, dell, HP, etc often used "customized" versions of a board.
Try this site and see what they say

It's actually a Gateway AUGSBURG board that was made by Intel.
