November 24, 2011 at 10:21:36
Specs: Windows XP
I'm not sure whether or not i have an error but when i view my C: disk it shows that i have less then 200mb of storage left and i am always getting very low disk space popup. I have deleted all my programs and games and i certainly don't have 37gb of space being used on my computer. I don't know where to look after i have searched the my documents and add/remove programs and deleted all i could. Any suggestions -thanks

Hi Puffs,

Check if you have emptied the recycle bin.
There are settings for the amount of space this can use, same for your browser's workspace. Either could be be too high.
Disc cleanup in programs/accessories./system tools may help as it scans and reports first what might be deleted. Takes a while to run though.
However far more information can be obtained from a free disk analyser, which can be downloaded.
e.g On my pc, one of these analysers showed Norton Internet Security was using a huge amount of diskspace, which never seemed reduce. Transpired it had a fault and was appending (rather than overwriting ) its downloads. Re-installing NIS cured.

Please advise back on progress.

Good Luck - Keep us posted.

Temporary fix:
Reduce the amount of system restore from 12% (default) to 8%. This will only delete old restore points and give you more to work with.
Permanent fix:
If this is a desktop add a second hard drive. Move all of your personal files over to it and uninstall programs and reinstall them (custom) to the second (larger) hard drive leaving only Windows, your antivirus and other utilities, and anything you cannot reinstall.
If this is a laptop then purchase a larger hard drive and clone the old drive over to the new drive and switch them. Most hard drive mfg's include on disk or as download software to do this, but depending on the laptop, you may need to use a desktop to actually do the cloning.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
