If you use a UPS your computer will not crash when you have a power outage and you will not have these troubles or other possibly more serious ones. A quality Uninterruptable Power Supply will support your computer for short periods of time when the power goes out and give you time to save your work and shut it down properly. Many also include software that will save and close your programs and initiate a safe shut down if left unattended and its battery drops below a preset level.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.

Every time your computer shuts down suddenly due to power problems you have a potential for lost or corrupted files as well as the possibility of damage to delicate electronics. A UPS does more than a surge protector, it protects against power surges, but it also protects from sudden voltage drops and the following surge back to full power that follows by filling in these with power from the internal battery as well as supporting it until you can do a proper, safe shut down. Even in areas like NYC that have generally reliable power, we still have occasional fluctuations. I began using one after I had trouble with a computer just after the lights dimmed (many years ago). At work, they did not think we needed them until one time when the power flickered a little bit and half the computers went down and the server had a problem that required a reload from back up and another half hour to make sure what data needed to be reentered and brought back up to the minute. After that every critical system got UPS'.

You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
