Lightning got into two of my computers

Hewlett-packard / Az208av-aba p6350z
July 19, 2011 at 06:56:15
Specs: Windows xp, 1.8 GHz / 768 MB
Lightning got into 2 of my computers. Everything was unplugged except the AT&t U-Verse cable
I'm thinking about buying a mother board for the eMachine.
My question:
What is needed to activate the repaired computer ?
I don't want to buy a new motherboard if I have to buy a new license.
I have an install CD for this eMachine w3118
Windows XP - 1.8 GHz - Ram 768

Thanks for any help.

"I'm thinking about buying a mother board for the eMachine"

Did you troubleshoot & determine that's what the problem is? What happens when you try to boot it up? Anything? Lights, fans, beeps? That system is fairly old & probably not worth investing much money in. Assuming you go ahead with the motherboard swap anyway, there should be no issues with Windows as long as you install an identical board. If you install a non-eMachines board but have a legal product key, you will probably have to reinstall XP using the "repair installation" method.

mickliq Good to hear from you.

The issue with Microsoft was what I was concerned with. The mother board would
be identical. Cost this week on sale for $69.99
Repair shop said the mother board was probably bad. Power on and the hard drive
runs wide open. The same with a different hard drive.
I've about come to the same conclusion as you about the value of this eMachine.
Thanks for your reply

The only way to be sure you don't have to get a new copy of XP is to put in the same level board. I'd assume that the board the OEM sells for that model would work even if not exact revision level and that the OEM disks would return it.

I would not waste too much time on this. For the price of the motherboard you may be better off on a new system even if a stripped model that you can upgrade with your parts. Any or all of your parts are subject to being damaged or bad.
