Less Free Memory Than Supposed To Be?

February 14, 2010 at 15:26:02
Specs: Windows XP
I have 1GB of operating memory. I checked all the processes and task manager shows that they take almost 600MB, however in available free memory he shows that 128MB left. Excuse me, but 1000MB - 600MB = 400MB. I am supposed to have 400MB of free memory - not 128MB. What is wrong? Are there hidden processes/applications that use memory that i don't see in task manager?

Note: I used CPUZ and it detects that total available memory is 1GB.

Onboard Graphics?
Reserved memory?

Where do you see 1GB during post or on the OS?

Once upon a time the floppy disk was king.

I have a laptop. I am not sure that graphics are onboard. What do you mean by "reserved memory"?

If, for example, your onboard graphics (the case with 99% of laptops) is set at 256Mb, then 256+128= very close to the 400Mb you expect to have remaining.

How many processes do you have running? I imagine you have some stuff loading on startup that you could do without.

Just a screenshot would suffice. Post the screenshot to photobucket or tinypic and share the URL here.
