External display is usually toggled by a key or key combination after the machine has booted. Laptops cannot be set to use the external display at startup.

Since you are getting no display onscreen how do you know the machine is even booting?

I have an Acer and a HP laptop that will both automatically boot to an external moniter but do not know specifically if this Lenovo will do it.

I would bet you cannot see the BIOS bootup on an external monitor regardless of the brand.

how do u know that the laptop boots? do u hear the fans spinning ? are the power lights on ? if u cant see the bios then the laptop is either shutting down automatically which is cause of overheating, the display issue can be either of the graphics chipset or the ram, do u hear any beeps on bootup?

The fan on the cpu is running as well as the lights indicating power. In addition, I can hear it cycle the dvd unit. I cant tell whether it gets to the hard drive but presume it does.
