LCD monitor won't work with my laptop

Specs: Windows XP
Hi!
I have an Acer Extensa 4220 laptop and I try to connect a Benq FP71G+ monitor to it - so I connect the monitor's cable to the only possible port for that :) Then I restart the laptop - so I see everything on the Benq monitor (i.e. it's working properly) - but the last thing I see on it is that Windows XP is loading, so then it should be already loaded I get a "Signal Cable Not Connected!" message and the monitor goes blank. What can I do about it?
Thanks!

I tried to change the settings - i.e. 32 to 16 color quality, 1280-780 to 1280-600 resolution, and restarted it and yet it was the same

I would try reducing the resolution even further. Start with the lowest resolution possible just to see if it's simply a resolution problem or something else.

Hi Rogusto,
Thank you for your advice! Just tried it - reduced to 600/800 - no progress.

Hmmm...While the computer is loading, do you get an image on both screens or just the BenQ? Try using the LCD/CRT key on your keyboard; Fn+F5 I believe is the correct combination on your particular laptop.

I am having the exact same issue. My work laptop is an Acer Extensa 5620 and the 24" Benq monitor I have connected to it won't work once XP loads up. If i connect the monitor to my HP Pavillion running Windows 7, it works perfectly. So i don't know if its an Acer problem or an XP problem.

Just worked it out. With the external monitor connected, right click on the desktop and go to Graphics Properties. Under the Display Devices tab, for Single Display click on Monitor and then click Apply
