Laptop won't boot.

Specs: Windows VP
Have an HP laptop running Windows XP. When turned it on yesterday, the grey HP screen briefly displayed, and then a light grey screen appeared and nothing further happened. Have tried CTRL + ALT + DELETE, have tried F11 and F12, have tried getting into SAFE mode, have tried turning it on and off many times, have left it overnight.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Thank you.

Windows startup files could be corrupt, in which case you could run a repair, but it might not hurt to test the hard drive, it could be causing the problem also. Does it ask to: insert proper boot disk.....or is it stuck on a grey screen?

It is just a grey screen. However, if I do ESC when it shows the HP icon, it goes to BOOT Setup I did run a long test on the hard drive from that program and it said it passed.

But none of the other tries for a safe boot have worked. Any ideas?
