laptop will not start up

Specs: Windows vista, pentium 42.6 ghz/3 gig ram
I dropped my laptop maybe 8 inches and now it will not boot. I tried to restore and it still will not work. Ran disk utility and it said "replace HDD".

Check the laptop is plugged in fully.

Or, something like Spinrite might help

But if you can't see the hard drive in the BIOS, then I think it's had it.

Yes, fully powered up and plugged in. I tried several times to restore HDD. It would run in safe mode, then would never go back. Tried restore again and never got it to log on again. I had already removed HD prior to reading reply. I will probably buy spinrite software as I watch over 5 pc's and laptops.
