laptop will not power up

Specs: Windows Vista
laptop froze on me so i unplugged from power, removed battery waited a few minutes and retried, would not powerup, tried a different laptop, no internet signal, reported it to phone people who said the line had eathed,they fixed it, could not get signal until i used a different transformer for the broadband homehub,it wasnt putting out enough power, everything works now, but original laptop is dead, an orange light appears briefly when i connect to power but nothing else, any ideas please

Make, model, age of laptop?

Orange light? What is the symbol associated with that light - Power (power symbol - circle with line on top), Hard drive (cylindrical symbol), Battery (battery symbol)?

its a battery light, laptop is packard bell, about 3 years old, thanks for reply

Without an EXACT description of the issue, sounds, anything on the LCD screen at all, battery light blinking or steady glow, blinking in a pattern or series, etc, I can't assist.

W/o knowing anything above, I would presume it's a hardware (motherboard) failure.

hi, the light stays on constant for a while then goes off, there are no sounds, no attempt at starting, nothing at all, the model is hera g, if nothing can be done is it poss to transfer files to a different laptop, and how, thanks for your time

Yes, transferring files off a hard drive is fairly easy with the right tools, like a USB IDE/SATA HDD adapter:
