Laptop single USB3 port stopped recognizing USB2 devices

Toshiba / Satellite r830-10c

Specs: Windows 7, Intel core-i3/8GB RAM
The single USB3 port on my Toshiba R830-10C laptop has stopped recognising any USB2 device plugged into it. This includes both of my Seagate external hard drives, my mobile broadband modem or any of the innumerable flash drives. All used to work and are still seen when plugged into the USB2 ports.

Any help welcome.

Do you have any USB 3.0 devices you can plug into the USB 3.0 port?. This is to establish whether or not the USB 3.0 port is totally not working regardless of what's plugged into it.

The outcome of that test will help us give you appropriate advice (eg, it may be working only for USB 3.0 devices, or it may be totally "dead".

If it proves to be the latter, the actual port itself (or the wiring to it) may be faulty.

My USB3 external drive works fine but takes a while to be recognised.
