laptop shuts down after it boots,I restart and happens again

Specs: Windows xp, intel rh80530 1133/512
laptop boots then shuts down restart and same thing happens,is it possible that the heat paste is dried out and needs to be replaced, fans work. run xp service pack 3. worked for awhile now it turns itself off almost immediatly after boot. reformat disk and gets to compaq and shuts down.

Well, that is what overheating often does - so you might be on the right general track.
Could be full of dirt I suppose (vents, fans and heatsinks).

That cpu paste can stand more heat than the processor can. It is not bad.

Consider heat and failing motherboard or power supply unit.

Start with memtest.

Hang up and live.
