Laptop screen turning black on startup +

Specs: Windows Vista
A few days ago, my laptop started displaying a black screen on startup. LEDs were still on, fan was running normally, just no display whatsoever. After a few hard restarts, it'd gradually get further and further through booting. I.e at first it'd show nothing more than a few seconds, then it'd show the windows logo, then eventually after many restarts it'd reach the desktop screen.

I've tried hard resetting it, by removing battery/power cable and holding the power button down for 60 seconds, but that did nothing. Tried a system restore, nothing again.

Really unsure what's the problem - would love any advice. Laptop's a Compaq Presario cq61-311ax. Another thing; the laptop won't register any lights whatsoever unless the battery is connected. The battery itself lasts for about 10 minutes without a power supply.

It might be my imagination, but it seems to occur less frequently when running heavy usage software, such as games or movies. If I leave it idling on desktop, it's liable to turn 'black' without warning whenever it feels like it.

Again, any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

It your laptop is taking long to boot up, it may be a hard drive issue. I suggest running a hard drive diagnostics software to find out.

Download Data lifeguard software:

1. Install the software
2. Double click your hard drive
3. Run the "extended test".

If the test fails, your hard drive is bad and needs to be replaced.
